When it comes to SEO, making changes to your site can feel a bit like spinning the roulette wheel. Will Google reward your updates with a lovely rankings boost – or will everything tank overnight?
Spoiler alert – it’s probably not that dramatic.
In a recent episode of Google’s Search Off the Record podcast, John Mueller and Martin Splitt reassured us all that it isn’t as risky as you might think tweaking your content for SEO. In fact, it’s kind of the point.
Let’s break down what they said, why it matters and how to make SEO changes without sweating bullets every time you hit “update.”
Can you make SEO changes safely?
Short answer – yes.
Long answer – yes, but be smart about it.
Google’s John Mueller said it’s totally fine to try things out on your site – especially if you’re using a content management system (CMS), where it’s easy to make small changes and publish them instantly.
“One of the nice parts about websites is… you can just edit the page and it’s live,” Mueller said. “It’s not that you have to do some big, elaborate work to put it live.”
So if you want to test a new headline, change up a product description or rejig your internal links, you’re not doing anything shady or risky. Google expects websites to evolve.
But won’t it look suspicious?
Ah yes, the long-standing rumour that making too many changes could trigger Google’s “this site is up to something” alarm.
While it’s true that Google monitors manipulative behaviour, regular content tweaks, testing and improvements aren’t going to get your site in trouble. This isn’t 2007 – Google’s smarter now.
You’re not gaming the system. You’re improving your content, responding to your users and (hopefully) delivering more value. And Google is into that.

How to play The Change Game (and win)
The trick to making SEO changes safely? It’s all in the tracking.
1. Know what you’re changing (and why)
Don’t go in blind. Have a hypothesis – maybe your H1 isn’t pulling its weight or your copy could be clearer. Start small and change one thing at a time so you can actually measure the impact.
2. Set up your tracking tools
- Google Search Console: See what people are searching for and how your pages are performing.
- Google Analytics: Check bounce rates, time on page and conversions.
- Microsoft Clarity: Great for heatmaps and scroll tracking to see how users interact with your content.
You need more than rankings – you need to know if your changes are affecting user behaviour, too.
3. Give it time
Google’s not instant. Smaller sites may see results from changes within 1-2 weeks. Bigger sites might take longer.
Don’t change something on Tuesday and expect a flood of traffic by Wednesday morning.
4. Don’t panic if something goes wrong
If a change backfires, don’t stress. That could be a drop in traffic or dip in conversions. It’s all part of the game. Roll it back, learn from it and move on. That’s why we test.
When to be cautious
Technical changes
Test them on a staging site. Don’t go swapping templates or updating plugins without knowing what might break. Run a crawl (using Screaming Frog, for example) to check for broken links or other issues before pushing anything live.
Content changes
You’ll need to go live to see real results – search engines and users need to interact with the page for your data to mean anything. But again, go in with a plan and monitor closely.
Test, track, tweak (repeat)
The Change Game isn’t about rolling the dice and hoping for the best. It’s about making informed updates, tracking the outcome and learning from what happens next.
And Google? They’re not watching with a red penalty button in hand. You won’t be slapped with a big, red X and instantly hear the wrong-answer noise from Family Fortunes. They want you to improve your site – just be strategic, not spammy.
At Wrise, we love testing things out (without causing chaos). Whether you’re refreshing your site’s content or planning a full SEO strategy, we can help you make smart moves that rise through the rankings.
