How to Check If SEO Is Working: Tracking Your Website’s Gains

Weight Lifter

So, you’ve invested in SEO. Maybe you’re blogging regularly. You’ve optimised your service pages. Perhaps you’ve even dipped your toes into backlinks.

But now you’re wondering: How do you actually check if SEO is working?

Here’s the truth… checking SEO progress is a lot like going to the gym.

You don’t do one workout, look in the mirror and expect to see abs. And you definitely don’t weigh yourself every morning and panic because nothing’s changed.

SEO works the same way. Let’s look at how to measure progress properly, without throwing in the towel too soon.

1. Are you showing up?

First stop: Google Search Console.

Inside Search Console, you’ll see something called impressions. This simply means how often your website appears in search results.

Even if no one clicks yet, rising impressions are a good sign.

It’s like consistently turning up at the gym. You might not look different yet, but you’re building momentum. If your impressions are increasing month on month, Google is starting to notice you.

No impressions? That’s like still sitting on the sofa.

2. Are your rankings improving?

Next up: keyword rankings.

If you were on page 5 for “emergency plumber in Leeds” and now you’re on page 2, that’s progress. Big progress.

You don’t walk into a gym and deadlift 100kg on day one. You add weight gradually. SEO works the same way:

  • Page 5 → Page 3 = early strength gains
  • Page 3 → Page 2 = serious progress
  • Page 2 → Page 1 = now we’re talking

Don’t obsess over one keyword either. That’s like only training your left arm and wondering why the rest of you looks the same. Look at overall keyword growth.

3. Is organic traffic increasing?

Now check your organic traffic in Google Analytics 4.

You’re looking for steady growth over time, not dramatic overnight spikes.

Compare:

  • This month vs last month
  • This quarter vs last quarter
  • Year-on-year trends

One quiet week doesn’t mean SEO has “stopped working”. Even the fittest people have off days.

If your organic traffic is trending upwards over several months, your SEO plan is building stamina.

4. Are you getting enquiries?

Here’s where it gets serious.

Traffic is great. Rankings are great. But enquiries? That’s the real goal.

Ask yourself:

  • Are contact form submissions increasing?
  • Are phone calls up?
  • Are you getting more relevant enquiries?

Because bigger biceps are nice… but being able to actually lift something useful is better.

If traffic is rising but leads aren’t, it could mean:

  • You’re targeting the wrong keywords.
  • Your website isn’t converting.
  • Your offer isn’t clear enough.

5. How long should SEO take?

This is the part most people don’t like.

Typically, you’re looking at 3-6 months before seeing meaningful movement. Sometimes faster. Sometimes longer.

It depends on:

  • Your industry
  • Your competition
  • Your starting point
  • How consistent you are

SEO is more like compound interest than a quick win. It builds on itself. The longer you stick with it, the stronger it gets. Quit after a month, and it’s like cancelling your gym membership after three workouts because you can’t see abs yet.

Common mistakes when checking if SEO is working

Let’s avoid the classic traps:

  • Checking rankings daily (nothing good comes from this)
  • Obsessing over one keyword (or should that be one muscle?)
  • Comparing yourself to national brands (the biggest guy in the gym!)
  • Expecting viral growth overnight (no pain, no gain…)
  • Ignoring conversions and only looking at traffic

So… is your SEO actually working?

If impressions are rising, rankings are climbing, organic traffic is trending up and enquiries are increasing, then congratulations. Your SEO training plan is doing its job.

If not? You might need a better programme.
