So, your site’s still ranking. Your SEO’s in decent shape. But the traffic? It’s taken a nosedive.
If that sounds familiar, don’t panic – you’re not alone. And no, it’s probably not your competitor outsmarting you or another one of Google’s infamous core updates. This time, the culprit is something newer, shinier and a bit more insidious…
Google’s AI Overviews.
These AI-generated summaries now appear right at the top of search results – answering questions so well that users no longer feel the need to click through to your website. And for small business owners relying on SEO to bring in leads, that’s a real headache.
Let’s unpack what’s going on, why it matters and what you can do about it.
What are Google’s AI Overviews?
You’ve likely seen them – even if you didn’t realise it. Let’s say you ask Google, “What’s the best way to get red wine out of a carpet?” Before you see a single blue link, a neat little summary pops up, telling you to dab with cold water, mix up a bit of dish soap and vinegar, and avoid rubbing.
Helpful? Yes.
But also devastating… for the websites that provided that information in the first place.
Google’s AI Overviews are exactly what they sound like – AI-generated answers that sit at the very top of the search results. We can even get an AI overview from Google explaining what AI overviews are!
Think of them as the grown-up, more powerful version of Featured Snippets. But instead of quoting one page, they pull together info from multiple sources, mix it up and give users a ready-made answer right on the search page.
Great for users. Not so great for businesses counting on those clicks.
Your ranking doesn’t matter if no one’s clicking
Here’s where things get serious.
Studies have shown that when an AI Overview is present, even the top-ranking organic result sees a massive drop in click-through rate (CTR).
According to research by Ahrefs, a page ranking in position #1 typically gets around 5.6% of clicks.
When an AI Overview appears? That number drops to just 3.1%. That’s a 34.5% loss in clicks — simply because users are satisfied by what they see at the top and never scroll down.
It’s like hosting a dinner party where Google meets your guests at the door, serves up hors d’oeuvres and sends them home – before they even step inside your beautifully prepared dining room.
And here’s the real low blow – it doesn’t matter how great your content is or how long you’ve been ranking well. If Google’s AI thinks it can answer the user’s question with a summary, it will – and your carefully crafted blog post might not even be seen.
Being cited doesn’t mean being clicked
“But wait, what if my content is the one being used in the AI Overview?”
Fair point. And yes, Google often cites its sources. But being mentioned isn’t the same as getting traffic. AI Overviews typically reference multiple pages – often without any clear order of priority. So even if your site is in the mix, it’s just one of many. There’s no guarantee a user will click your link. In many cases, users don’t click at all.
Worse still, you can’t even tell if you’ve been cited. Google Search Console currently doesn’t show impressions, clicks or even whether your content appeared in an AI Overview. It’s like shouting into the void and hoping someone’s listening – except you don’t know if they are, and there’s no way to follow up.
Welcome to the world of Zero-Click Searches
Google’s AI Overviews are just the latest twist in a bigger story – one that’s been quietly reshaping the search landscape for years. It’s called the zero-click search.
A zero-click search is exactly what it sounds like: a search that ends without the user clicking a single result. They ask a question. Google answers it – right there on the results page. Job done. No clicks. No website visits. No traffic for you.
These snippets, panels, maps, widgets and now AI Overviews are all part of the same strategy: to keep users on Google’s platform for as long as possible.
But why?
Because Google doesn’t just want to answer your questions. It wants to own the whole journey – from curiosity to conversion.
While someone searching “how to fix a hole in the roof” might not click an ad, that same person is far more valuable a few searches later when they type in “roofers near me” or “emergency leak repair”.
By giving quick answers upfront, Google delays the user’s exit. It keeps them on the page, in the ecosystem and closer to that moment of purchase – where ads really do get clicked. In this model, your content becomes the bait, but Google holds the fishing rod.
It’s clever. It’s convenient. And if you rely on organic traffic? It’s a bit of a nightmare.
Rankings are becoming less relevant
Once upon a time, if you were in the top 3 search results, you could expect a decent stream of traffic. But in this new AI-powered world, even a #1 spot might be buried below the fold – especially on mobile. That’s two or three full swipes before a user even sees your link.
Even more frustrating? AI Overviews don’t just pull from the best-ranked results. Recent data shows that 85% of citations in these summaries come from pages outside the top 10.
So, while you’ve been fighting tooth and nail for a top spot, Google’s happily quoting some obscure blog with better formatting or a punchier answer. Real people might not like scrolling beyond the first page, but Google’s AI bots have no problem at all!
In other words, traditional SEO rankings aren’t the golden ticket anymore. It’s not about being on Page 1 – it’s about being part of the AI answer.
How to adapt to AI Overviews (and even benefit)
This all might sound a bit bleak – but it’s not game over.
In fact, there’s still opportunity for businesses who are ready to pivot and play smart.
1. Make your content AI-friendly
If you want to be quoted in AI Overviews, you need to write like an AI would read:
- Start with a clear, concise answer at the top
- Use headers (H2s, H3s), bullet points and summaries
- Break things down into logical, skimmable chunks
- Include a short, skimmable summary near the top of your articles
Basically, make it as easy as possible for the AI to grab your content and use it.
2. Build real authority (E-E-A-T)
Google’s AI leans heavily on trusted sources. So, showcase your expertise:
- Write as a real person with real experience
- Include author bios, credentials and case studies
- Link to reputable sources and share first-hand insights
Don’t just parrot the same advice as everyone else. Bring your unique perspective.
When you consistently demonstrate experience, expertise, authority and trustworthiness, you’re not just ticking Google’s boxes – you’re building what’s known as an SEO moat.
Just like a moat protects a castle, an SEO moat protects your rankings and traffic from sudden shifts – like new competitors, core updates or even AI Overviews.
Think of it this way: anyone can publish a list of “Top 10 Roof Repair Tips.” But not everyone can back it up with:
- A decade of experience fixing roofs
- Photos from real jobs
- Case studies showing what worked (and what didn’t)
- Customer reviews and before-and-after results
That’s your moat. It’s the stuff competitors – and AI – can’t easily replicate. It takes time and effort to build, but once it’s in place, it’s incredibly hard to beat.
So, if you’re serious about long-term SEO success, don’t just aim to rank. Aim to defend. Build a moat so wide and deep that Google has no choice but to keep coming back to you.
3. Focus on what AI can’t fake
AI’s good at summaries – but not originality. Create content it can’t replicate:
- Original research
- Personal stories and use cases
- Strong opinions or contrarian takes
- Unique data or customer feedback
The more human and authentic your content, the harder it is for Google to replace it.
4. Diversify your traffic sources
Put simply – don’t keep all your eggs in Google’s basket. Build:
- Email lists (own your audience)
- Social media followings (LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram)
- Communities (Discord, Facebook Groups)
- Syndicated content (Medium, Substack, guest posts)
When your brand becomes the destination, traffic follows you – not the algorithm.
5. Double down on bottom-of-funnel pages
Not all searches trigger AI Overviews – and that’s where your best SEO opportunities now live.
When someone asks, “Is matt or silk paint better for ceilings?” – Google jumps in with an instant AI-generated answer.
But when they search “ceiling paint” or “best white ceiling paint UK” – there’s no AI summary. Just traditional results… and a chance for you to win the click.
Yes, there are ads and the ‘People also ask’ section – but you have a better chance here of getting clicks.
These are bottom-of-the-funnel searches. The ones people make when they’re ready to buy, book or commit. And Google still treats them like gold.
So make these pages count:
- Optimise your service, product and category pages with clear headings, strong CTAs and helpful detail
- Build more internal links pointing to them from blogs, guides and FAQs
- Attract inbound links by making these pages genuinely useful and reference-worthy
Think of these pages as your money pages – because they are. In an era of shrinking clicks, these are the clicks that still convert.
The SEO pie is shrinking – but there’s still a slice for you
The cold truth? AI Overviews are here to stay, and they’re carving up the search results like a Sunday roast.
But that doesn’t mean SEO is dead. Far from it.
Yes, traffic might be down. Yes, clicks are harder to earn. But that just means the competition is thinning out. Fewer businesses are going to stick it out – and the ones that do? They’ll be the ones that win long-term.
So don’t throw in the towel. Adapt. Be smarter. Be more helpful. And remember – someone’s still getting those clicks. Might as well be you.
