How Much Traffic Are Websites Actually Getting From AI? (Spoiler: Not Much)

ChatGPT Search on Phone

Everyone’s buzzing about AI. It can write emails, answer questions and offer relationship advice. With the rise of AI-powered searches, we’ve even heard people asking whether we still need Google! But let’s be clear…

Yes – AI is exciting, powerful and rapidly evolving. But if you’re expecting tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity to send floods of traffic to your website, it’s time for a reality check.

The truth behind the AI traffic hype

According to a major study by Ahrefs analysing 35,000+ websites, AI makes up just 0.1% of total referral traffic. You read that right. Less than one click in a thousand comes from AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.

To put it in perspective, Google sends 345 times more traffic than all three of those AI tools combined. Even Reddit – hardly the biggest referrer in town – beats AI slightly, contributing 0.13% of traffic vs. AI’s 0.12%.

So, while AI might feel like the next big thing, it’s actually a bit of a ghost town when it comes to real, measurable web traffic…

Who actually is getting AI traffic?

If you’re particularly keen on AI, you might be wondering who’s getting that 0.1%. Are they doing anything special? Interestingly, AI referrals aren’t entirely random. The Ahrefs study found that:

  • Small websites (under 10K visits/month) tend to get a slightly larger share (up to 0.3%) than massive ones.
  • US-based businesses, especially in the “Business & Industrial” sector, are most likely to benefit.
  • “Best of” articles, product pages and guides tend to earn the most AI clicks.

Even then, we’re still talking about very modest numbers.

And here’s another kick in the teeth – some of the “AI traffic” you do see in your analytics might not even be correctly attributed. It often gets lumped under “direct” traffic, making the true numbers even harder to gauge.

So, should you optimise for AI?

AI can still play a role in how you get clicks – just not as directly as you might have hoped. Alongside visibility and brand mentions, businesses also need to think about how their content and tools are referenced safely, especially as AI platforms increasingly rely on live data and integrations that require an AI runtime security safeguard to ensure accuracy, trust and protection at scale.

It’s great for brand awareness, for example. Being mentioned in ChatGPT’s answers can build trust, even if the user doesn’t click right away. In fact, Ahrefs attributed around 3% of their own signups last year to AI mentions rather than AI traffic.

It’s a bit like having an influencer using your products, but not explicitly linking to them and telling their followers to try them out.

With all this in mind, it’s risky to go all in with AI optimisation. Unless your audience is actively using AI tools to research purchases (and you know this from your own data), you can’t rely on its tiny minority of traffic referrals to deliver results.

Traditional SEO still dominates

The bottom line? AI traffic is a nice bonus, but it won’t pay the bills.

Search engines like Google remain the number one way customers discover businesses online. If you want real traffic, real leads and real results, SEO is still where it’s at.
