AI Can’t Do It All: Google Explains Why SEO Is Still Essential

Magician Pulling AI Out Of A Hat

AI is everywhere right now. From writing product descriptions to answering customer questions, it’s tempting to think these tools might finally take the “hard work” out of digital marketing – including SEO.

But if you’ve been wondering whether search engine optimisation is on the way out, Google’s John Mueller has a reassuring (and frankly, sensible) take – AI can support SEO, but it definitely won’t replace it.

Here’s why SEO still matters – even in the age of generative AI – and what that means for your website.

AI Is powerful – but it’s not a magic wand

AI is evolving fast. Platforms like Wix and WordPress are weaving it into their workflows, and it’s helping marketers do everything from generating metadata to suggesting blog topics. Handy, right?

Absolutely – but AI doesn’t run your website. And it certainly doesn’t strategise.

While it might be able to spit out a paragraph or two, it can’t make the high-level decisions that guide a strong SEO campaign – like which pages to prioritise, how to outperform your competitors or how to structure your site for crawlability.

Straight from Google: SEO is still crucial

In a recent discussion, Google’s John Mueller made it crystal clear that SEO isn’t going anywhere. When asked whether AI would make learning SEO obsolete, he said:

“Having a website is the basis for being visible in all of these systems… a chat response can’t replace that.”

His point? AI chatbots and other tools still rely on well-optimised websites to pull their information from. If you want to show up in AI-generated responses – or traditional search results – you still need solid, search-friendly content in place.

Websites are still the foundation of online visibility

Mueller gave a relatable example – if someone wants to buy a t-shirt, they’re not looking for a chatbot to explain how to make one. They want a link to a site where they can browse designs and buy what they like.

And that’s the bit AI can’t do. It can’t provide your stock, your brand voice, your conversion-optimised landing pages or your user experience. It can’t replace the function of a great website. All it can do is refer to the sites that are already doing it well.

So if your website’s not pulling its weight, you’re not just missing out on search traffic – you’re missing out in AI-driven results too.

Real SEO is still a job for real people

Yes, AI can generate a title tag or give you a list of trending keywords. But that’s surface-level stuff.

SEO is much bigger than that. It’s about understanding your audience, crafting unique content that answers their questions, fixing technical issues that could block search engines and building a strategy that gets your site in front of the right people. It’s ongoing, ever-changing and way too nuanced for a tool to manage on its own.

As Mueller put it, SEO pros don’t just optimise – they explain the “why” and track the “what next”. That human judgement and strategic insight isn’t going out of fashion anytime soon.

What should businesses do now?

If you’ve been holding off on SEO because AI “might take over”, don’t. The truth is, AI is becoming a supportive part of the SEO toolkit – not a substitute for it.

Search engines (and AI tools) still rely on your website to know who you are, what you offer, and why anyone should care. If your site isn’t up to scratch, it’s unlikely that either Google or a chatbot is going to point people your way.

SEO still rules (just ask Google)

AI is here to stay. It’s a great assistant. But it’s not a replacement for SEO – and even Google agrees.

So, if you’re serious about showing up, standing out and turning clicks into customers, make sure your SEO strategy is still top of the agenda.
